Australian law (Marriage Act 1961) stipulates that marriage ceremonies may only take place between a man and a woman.
Commitment ceremonies, following the form of a marriage ceremony, but omitting the words required by law, may take place between a man and a woman where both parties do not require the solemnisation of their union under the law.
The union of same gender couples, can also be accommodated in a commitment ceremony, which usually takes the form of a marriage ceremony, with the omission of the words referring to the male and female gender, and the legal wording required in the Marriage Act 1961.
Venue The choice of venue is yours. Options include the family home, parklands (may require local council approval and payment of fee), non-denominational chapel, function rooms, or privately owned facility.
